The Professor has been holding down the keyboard position in Surrender Dorothy since 2003. When not on world stadium tours with the band, The Professor is a consultant for the Dave Matthews Band. The Professor is the inspiration behind the oft used statement amongst keyboardists, “HWTPPI”, which means “How Would The Professor Play It?” The Professor has inspired such greats as Beethoven, Billy Joel and Keith Emmerson. If you have ever seen Dave Matthews and they sound exceptionally good that night, look for a guy in a cheesy beard, sunglasses and a hat. That is The Professor sitting in, but wanting to retain his anonymity and not steal Dave’s thunder. On the personal side, The Professor is a semi-professional crab racer. He even has his own saddle that he uses for competition. “There is a lot of work in training a crab to be a good runner.” he proclaims. “You have to know how to speak their language to inspire them to run hard.” Good thing that The Professor has such a crabby personality.
